From April 25-27, 2025, the Startup Societies Conference II transformed Florianópolis, Brazil, into a global hub of innovation. This wasn’t just another conference - it was a movement to reimagine how we live, govern, and thrive in the digital age. The event brought together visionary thinkers, builders, and creators to tackle the question: How do we upgrade our 250-year-old systems for the internet era?

The answer unfolded over three electrifying days, packed with thought-provoking panels, cutting-edge tech showcases, and networking that sparked lifelong collaborations. The conference explored four transformative themes:

  • Governance: Revolutionizing decision-making with transparency and efficiency beyond outdated election cycles.

  • Finance: Harnessing blockchain to create a financial system that’s open and inclusive for all.

  • Health and Wellness: Leveraging AI to revolutionize public health and personal well-being.

  • Culture and Education: Shifting to a collaborative mindset while equipping future generations for tomorrow’s challenges.

Day 1: Reimagining Cities, Education, and Finance

The conference kicked off with a burst of energy on April 25, setting the tone for what was to come. Attendees gathered for a warm welcome coffee at 8:00 AM, followed by an inspiring Welcome Ceremony led by Paloma Lecheta, Nima Kaz and Jean Hansen, who introduced the Startup Societies Movement.

What Stood Out:

  • Network States and the Creator Economy: A dynamic panel featuring Daniel Thompson and Caroline Poli explored how digital nomads and creators can thrive in network states and digital economic zones. They shared actionable insights on building communities that empower creators globally.

  • Parallel Education: The education panel was a game-changer, with Murilo Loureiro diving into digital marketplaces for learning and Diogo Ruiz showcasing tech solutions for neurodivergent children. Marina Beraz highlighted the challenges in our education system, stressing the need to align education with children's skills and curiosity. This approach would create a more personalized education, considering each child's unique personality, regardless of whether they have a neurodivergent diagnosis.

  • Parallel Societies: This panel was a highlight, featuring pioneers like Jose Mateus and Andrea Druck of Jurerê In and Niklas Anzinger of Infinita City, who’s working to “make death optional.” Erick Brimen of Próspera shared how they’re pioneering “Governance as a Service,” while Jean Hansen showcased Ipê City’s social technologies for internet-native societies. The ideas were bold, and the crowd was captivated.

  • Parallel Governance: To wrap up, Hugo Mathecowitsch introduced new governance systems, emphasizing digital-first models that empower local communities. Rodrigo Rocha discussed how charter cities can promote responsive urbanism and innovative city planning.

Plus, history was made in the Network Societies movement! The Florianópolis Declaration has officially launched a collaboration to establish a Digital Economic Zone in Brazil during Ipê Village.

Day 2: Biotech Breakthroughs, Onchain Governance, and Emerging Tech

Day 2 turned up the heat, diving deep into health, governance, and the technologies that will define the next decade. The morning kicked off with a welcome coffee, followed by a series of amazing keynotes.

What Stood Out:

  • Biotech for a Better Future: Niklas Anzinger unveiled Infinita’s ambitious vision for accelerated biotech development. Gabriel Bottos of Vesper Biotechnologies and Gustavo Marion of MyDose inspired attendees with their missions to drive positive impact and empower individuals through biotech and health activities.

  • Onchain Governance: The governance panel was a deep dive into Web3 solutions for cities, with Gabriel Novak exploring DAO tooling, Daniela Zschaber discussing onchain reputation systems, and Rafael Castaneda introducing Valocracy. These ideas sparked lively debates about the future of urban governance.

  • Parallel Investments: Bruno Ceschin from JUPTER shared insights on how to find, fund, and launch the future. Karin Rocha discussed her efforts in network state investment in Brazil, highlighting innovative approaches to funding and development.

  • Emerging Technologies: Ash Datsiuk and Raul Guedes blew minds with their talks on the convergence of crypto and AI, and parallel compute solutions via Higher Order Company. The room was buzzing with excitement about how these technologies could reshape industries.

  • Parallel Media: Wrapping things up, Aaron Stanley shared how media can influence the crypto world, while Aleksandar Svetski talked about the future of social networks. Cecilia Veloso brought her insights on UX/UI strategies for engaging decentralized audiences, emphasizing the importance of user experience.

We also had a behind the scenes at Founder Desk: Attendees got an exclusive tour of the AI MacMini Cluster at Founder Desk, followed by a happy hour that kept the energy high.

Day 3: Law, Finance, and Tech for Impact

The final day was a powerful close, focusing on legal frameworks, decentralized finance, and tech for global impact. Attendees left inspired and ready to take action.

What Stood Out:

  • Parallel Law and Finance: Julia Shinohara and Christian Betancourt explored AI’s role in law and legal frameworks for special zones, while João Ferreira, Fernando Fontes, and Alex Melo dove into the DeFi opportunity, the future of cryptocurrencies, and network society security. These sessions were a masterclass in building systems for the future.

  • Emerging Tech for Impact: Jhonata Oliveira presented ORN Space’s solution for a credible carbon market, while Jan Felix Koeppen shared Team I.Q.’s NASA Space Apps Hackathon 2024-winning project. These talks showcased how tech can solve global challenges.

  • Remote Keynote: Patri Friedman, a pioneer in seasteading and charter cities, delivered a stirring keynote on the evolution of governance models, leaving attendees inspired to build the cities of tomorrow.

  • Ipê Architect Showcase: The Ipê tech stole the show, with Chris Dietrich, Felipe Novaes Rocha, Mihkel Joll, and George Alexandre Silva demonstrating its infrastructure for internet-native societies. From blockchain-based Crypto Passports to an off-grid Bitcoin-to-beer system, the innovation was jaw-dropping.
